A chance to meet our school community

Jaime, Robyn, Annie & Fraser – The Akehurst Family, WWS new family

The Akehurst family have thoroughly enjoyed our transition to Whistler Waldorf this year. Our family have been living here in Whistler for around 18 years, originally from Vancouver Island. Annie in year 5 and Fraser in Briar Rose (kindergarten), have been supported by new friends and wonderful teachers through their transition to Waldorf. If we were to summarize our fall, it would be calm and beautiful. Waldorf has taught our family to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

One memory this past October was on a walk behind Meadow Park, Annie took me off the trail as she was elaborately explaining her rich knowledge of fauna and flora. Before I knew it I was on my hands and knees looking at the Earth floor. To experience how she took her learning from the classroom out into the community was phenomenal. She was so excited to share her learning with me. Fraser shares his passion daily for candle lit meals and joyful songs. He retells stories he has heard around our dinner table. He is excited to tell us about his forest plays and making new friends at school.

We feel our children are in the best possible care we could dream for them. Waldorf has blended our Islander grass roots with our mountain culture lifestyle. Our friendships have expanded as we have enjoyed the parent events where we have met wonderful families. We feel that we share similar family values with these parents and we look forward to spending more time together.

The Winter Faire was spectacular. Our children created beautiful crafts that we will cherish for years to come. We loved how the food was simple yet warm and nourishing. We love the overall emphasis on health and well being both in the class and during festivities.
We are grateful to say we are part of the Waldorf community. After participating in the most recent Summit Centre meeting we are excited for the future and what these opportunities bring to both our children and our community.

Father Daughter Dance Tickets on Sale Sunday March 1 – This year’s Father Daughter Dance is Saturday, May 16th, 2020 at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler.  The event is a major  fundraiser for the Whistler Children’s Centre and usually sells out every year.

COWS Fundraiser for Mental Health on Friday March 6th 2020 –  COWS Whistler will be donating all of our Ice Cream sales, staff tips & any other donations we receive to the Canadian Mental Health Awareness association of BC on this day in memory of a long time friend & manager that worked at our COWS location.

This is the second year we are running this event! Last year our store alone raised $4k and company wide we donated $43, 000 to this amazing cause.

Please come out and buy an ice cream in support of Mental Health.

Katherine Fawcett’s Swan Suit Book Launch on April 7 –

This is a free event at the Whistler Public Library. From Katherine: “I hope you’ll join me in Whistler to celebrate the launch of The Swan Suit (Douglas & McIntyre)”. Maya Coleman, WWS student since Kindergarten, now in Grade 7

You’ve been a student at WWS for a long time; what is your favourite part of school?
Everything! I like my classes and have a lot of fun. I also really like all my teachers, they are good at their job.

What has been your favourite block this year?
I enjoyed the creative writing block and am most proud of the two poems that I wrote. I also like drama and we are in our play block right now. Our play is tonight and I am playing the 2nd senator’s wife as well as the Grand Duchess. (Note: Maya’s poem “Autumn Passing” is featured in the photos below).

Next year you are officially a high school student. Are you excited about that?
Yes, I am super excited. I will get to hang out more with my brother who will be in Grade 10. I am also excited for all the camping trips, the opportunity to play guitar in music class and also continuing to do class plays.

What would you tell a prospective student looking at joining your class?
We welcome new people. It’s nice having people from different backgrounds and cultures in our school. We all really like to learn and have fun in our classes.

Ms. Edrie Henderson – WWS Student Support Manager

Edrie, I know you wear many hats here at WWS – what do you do?

Yes, I do wear several hats. I coordinate the Alternate Education program which allows high level athletes to manage their schooling and training. I also support the Grade 10 Exchange Program – our students are able to study at other Waldorf schools worldwide. I help support the fundraising efforts of our Grade 11 students who fund raise for their Grade 12 international service trip. I am the Student Support Manager and work with students on their math & English language skills and lastly, I am the Care Chair which means that I work with students who need extra social/emotional support.

As someone who works across the grades and in different areas of the school, what do you think is the benefit of a Whistler Waldorf education?

I have worked in education for 21 years – the last 7 has been here. I believe that students in Waldorf are held  – their needs are met and they are cared for in ways that I didn’t experience in other schools. Students here are successful beyond what I think they would be elsewhere.

Tell us something we might not know about you:

My professional experience began as a wilderness trip leader. I worked with at risk students and took them on extended wilderness trips In my free time, I am an avid baker and love to spend time with my family and my two dogs!

Mollianne Reynolds – WWS Grade 1 Teacher

After a couple class teaching cycles, you were solely the Handwork teacher. You are now back at it again with Grade 1. How has the return to class teaching been?
I cannot say the return to class teaching has not been a little exhausting some days and specifically the early morning start was not something I missed as a handwork teacher. That being said, I have always loved and been inspired by the many intertwined aspects of the curriculum and as class teacher I revel in exploring all these aspects and the many subjects with a class again. Not to mention how lovely it is to once again swim about in imaginative stories, create more chalkboard art, and develop songs, poems, and plays for lessons beyond the yarn bin. And of course I miss teaching all the students for handwork; however, I find it equally fulfilling to be with the Grade One (and Two!) and work with more than just yarn, fabric and thread.

Each day must present you with funny memorable moments from your students. Do you have one to share?
Indeed I have a number of priceless moments that I have stored away in a little corner of my head – they often come out at important times of reflection like graduations. Often the humorous comments or situations reflect the students’ experiences at that moment, but occasionally they could apply any one of us. As was the case one day when a Grade Three student paused in their book work and muttered in explanation, “My third eye is all wobbly.” My heart went out to him – I hate it when that happens too.
You are known for your impressive art skills across mediums – fabric arts, chalk, and watercolor. Do tell – what is your favorite?
When it comes to the arts, I have to admit I often feel like a jack of all trades and master of none  regularly I create pieces that I know could be better, but I haven’t the patience or expertise to perfect to them to the finished products I had in mind. But the closest I come is with chalkboard art – especially when I have an idea in mind – so I that is where I am most content with my end results. Knitting, however, is something that I find the most relaxing and almost addictive (when I have the time to work on it).

Vicky Bunbury – WWS Founding Parent; Whistler Summit Centre Executive Director

Our school is entering it’s 20th year! You were one of the three founding members. Do you think back in 2000 you knew it’d grow to be the size it is today?

Honestly, we didn’t really plan that far ahead. We knew we wanted to offer Waldorf education for more than our children, we wanted to provide a Waldorf education option for Whistler families. In the very early days it was about gathering 10 children so we could hire a teacher and qualify as an independent school with the BC Ministry of Education. After that we would add a class each year and that’s how we became a Pre-k to 8th grade school.  The decision to launch a high school came after that. By then we had a lot more experience and expertise in the school. Ali Blancher and Christine Cook (who moved back to the U.K.) were instrumental in bringing the high school into being. The two of them really made that happen on the educational side.

I have portrayed a somewhat unstructured picture of the forming of the school. It was unstructured in that we really couldn’t predict, with something so new, what would happen. But we did a lot of strategic planning way back starting in 2001 and so always balanced form with what was at times quite a fluid environment, growing a school from the ground up. So I guess the answer to your question is no and yes. Obviously when you are planning and looking ahead the numbers show up. But that said, you are so busy in the day to day making it happen and planning for the next year that we didn’t really have time to live in that space.

What is a favorite memory from your days on the ground at WWS?

Okay, that is a really difficult question to answer. There are so many amazing memories. Hiring our first teacher, Janet Goldhammer, who was such a great gift and really set us on our course. I remember the first presentation the class did. It was Michaelmas in 2001 and the children had been with Janet for about 3 weeks. We gathered at Rainbow Park and the class recited a poem that must have been 10 minutes long. I was blown away. They were 7 year-olds – it was incredible. I think that was the moment that I knew we had made the right choice.

When my eldest son was in 6th grade we brought a choral group, Musica Intima, for a performance at Maury Young Theatre and the students sang 2 pieces with them. Now this was the lead class in the school and at that time I think there were only 6 of them. They sang a few pieces with the group and then did a piece on their own. Ms. Reynold’s will remember, she was their teacher at the time and brought so much amazing music to them. It was really incredible. Their voices filled that space and they sounded like angels. That was an amazing experience.

Also, of course when we hired Kyle Kirkegaard as the grade 1 teacher a few years ago. For one of the children, from the first 3 of the home school cohort come back to teach at the school was a pretty profound moment for me. Of course there’s all the building and opening new buildings but for me it always comes back to the children and their experience. I mean that’s why we’re doing all of this.

Your own boys were some of the school’s first students. What are they up to now?

My boys are great! One is at UBC and of course living in Vancouver and the other has just moved to Squamish after a stretch in Vancouver, Banff, and the Kootenays. They are terrific people and I love nothing more than the opportunity to hang out with my adult children.

What are your wishes for WWS for the next 20 years? (Obviously here looking for something about your work with WSC.)

Obviously it is to finally have a permanent, purpose-built school facility where the amazing education that the teachers give to the children can be uplifted to an even higher level. That the teachers have a workplace that allows them to give their energy to their work rather than a work around. And finally, that Waldorf education in Whistler has a space that honours it’s important place in the educational landscape both in Whistler and in the world.

Wed. Jan. 29, 6 – 7:30pm – Session 2: How to choose the best option and apply plus vocabulary to help with scholarships, grants and bursaries.

Ali Blancher – WWS Parent, Math/Science Teacher & Lower School Chair

Ali, you are one of the longest standing faculty members at the school, right?

Right. I’ve been at WWS since 2009. Katherine Fawcett, Molli Reynolds and Tracy Graham have all been here a longer than me but I think I am the only one to have worked across all three divisions – Early Years, Lower School and High School.

What keeps you here?

In addition to being a teacher here, I am also the parent of two young children who are in the Early Years. I believe in the educational philosophy. Our school is committed to its students both as learners and as human beings. As a parent, I am appreciative of the care and attention that my children receive and the values that are instilled.

What might folks not know about you?

Well, I am a secret knitter. I supported Molli in Grade 1 handwork when I first started and learned to knit. I am also an avid biker and skier.

What excites you about the future here at WWS?

Every single year since I started, conversations have been had about finding a permanent home for our school. I am so excited – so excited – about the Whistler Summit Centre’s plan and am so grateful to everyone who is donating their time and resources to this project. I can’t wait for the school to finally be in a permanent place.

Cristiana Spooner – WWS Communications Manager

When did you join WWS? 

I’ve been the Communications Manager for Waldorf since May of last year. It’s been a wonderful experience. I’ve really enjoyed working with everyone at the school, as well as getting to know all the lovely students and families. I’ve also learned a lot more about Waldorf education and am very impressed with the principles of it.

What else do you do when you’re not at WWS?

I volunteer as a Girl Guides Leader with about 24 enthusiastic 9-12 year old girls on Monday nights and am proud to help with communications as a board member for Whistler Adaptive Sports Programs which run adaptive sports in the Corridor for all ages. I’m also an instructor at the Whistler Adventure School teaching editing with their Media & Marketing program. Visual communications design and marketing has always been my a big part of my life and now, I feel like I’m at the stage where I can hopefully impart what I’ve learned along the way working in communications and marketing in Whistler for over 25 years. It’s been a lot of fun and has recently inspired me to get my camera out again to capture more of this beautiful place we live in!

Leo and Sabrina Chaves – WWS Parents to Gustavo (Gr 8) & Luiza (Gr 3)

You made the big move from Brazil to Whistler a few years ago now. Is Whistler now your permanent home? 

Yes, as a family we’ve chosen Whistler to settle new roots and we are very happy. We found elements here that we consider important like safety for the kids, good education, and diverse culture. The lifestyle you can build here is an amazing mix of working hard and at the same time fully enjoying life. The outdoor life with the exuberant nature is becoming something rare especially being so close to a big center. What our family experiences here is incredible.

Has life in Canada and enrolment in our school brought any surprises? 

Yes when we decided to enroll our kids at WWS the only thing we knew about the method and the school was the online research we did. We liked what we read, but didn’t know how well our kids would adapt. Very quickly we noticed they were thriving in all aspects of their lives. In less than a year, all the family were totally adapted and already felt embraced by the community. We can say that the school was a key element to facilitate such a good transition. We had our own challenges in the first year but considering the big picture it couldn’t be better. Today our kids are almost more Canadians than Brazilians and I say that in a good way. We love our country, we miss our family, but Whistler became home and the WWS is our kids’ main reference offering the tools they need to grow.

I know you have been donating lots of time and energy behind the scenes to the school & Whistler Summit Centre. December is often a time associated with giving –  in recognition of that, what prompts you to give your time so generously?

When we decided to move to Whistler, as a family we worked to have a clear view of our values. Time is one of the most valuable commodities today but I believe this is about choices and priorities. Over the last two years an unique opportunity was presented to create something incredible for our School and our community. I started searching to better understand the school’s needs and acting the best way I can to support those short term needs. But I think it’s important to look and work on the long term as well, so not only my kids but all newcomers can access Waldorf education. Whistler Summit Centre will not not only allow that to happen but will also create a ripple effect to develop and support the local community.

December Youth Centre Calendar: So many events going on… the annual ‘gender bread’ decorating event, the YC’s Turkey Dinner and more. Come on out to the YC in December!.

Student Visitors Requesting Temporary Accommodation:

There have been 2 visitor requests for short-term (1-3 weeks) accommodation in Whistler for this upcoming ski season. Details of both students are below with contact info. included. A bed or possible couch could do the trick so they can visit and enjoy our wonderful Whistler community for even a small amount of time or to get settled for longer. Thanks for your generosity!

Callum Mather – I’m 16 years old, from Australia and have been travelling around the U.S. for the past three months exploring, hiking and rock climbing. For our second part of the trip we came to explore beautiful British Columbia and hopefully to go snowboarding. I got a Whistler ski pass for my birthday and am hoping to use it for the start of the snow season.

Jonathan Marten – I’m 16 years old, coming from Switzerland where I visit a Waldorf school near to Zurich. At the moment I am on an international stay on Maui, there also visiting a Waldorf school, as my plans coming to Whistler did not work in summer. I am an uncomplicated, happy and sportiv guy and a fascinated Snowboarder.

House swap available in France:

Looking for a 3 bedroom plus home in Whistler over the Christmas break 2020 to swap with a Provençal farmhouse in rural area of France, 20 mins from Avignon. (Swap can be non-simultaneous).

Our home is a typical Provençal three storey 1860’s converted farmhouse with sitting room with large open fireplace, dining room, modern kitchen, 5 bedrooms, 3 modern bathrooms. Each room has heat pump heating/air conditioning units and all windows are double glazed. The house has its back to a local road to the north and overlooks a large 6000m2 garden to the south. The garden is mainly grass and trees with a secluded pool and a small vineyard.

How long have you been a student at WWS?  – Since Grade 2
And what do you like most about our school?
I like that is it art and nature based. I don’t think students in other schools get to use art to learn in the same way we do. I also think that there is a different focus on character.
Tell me what you mean by that.
Well, I think people are able to express themselves and be who they really are. I also like the small size – it is easy to make friends with everyone.
I heard that you shared a poem you wrote at assembly this week
Yes, I’m in a Biology main lesson with Mr. Hazel. We were asked to write a poem answering the question “What is Life?”.  I thought of all of the positive aspects – it’s happy, it’s fun, but I quickly decided that I also wanted to make it realistic and capture more what life really is. I thought, for example, of women and how they might feel insecure about looks at times. I tried to capture all of that.
And you read it to the entire High School? That’s brave!
Actually, I’m trying to do one thing per day that scares me. So, I was nervous, but I did it!

What is Life
Life is a game
That we all play

Matt Hazel– WWS Teacher

Mr. Hazel is new to our HS Math and Science teaching team this year. Please share a bit about your background with us:

I was a full time teacher in the UK for 6 years. In 2014, I made the decision to leave that role and move to Whistler. I became a CSIA level 1 ski instructor as well as a level 1 IDP bike guide for WB. I also founded ‘Hazel Tutoring’. Creating this program has allowed me to take my love of outdoor, practical and project based learning and develop it further.

Why did you decide to join WWS?

I believe the school’s ethos lines up perfectly with my approach to both teaching and learning and am extremely excited to continue to develop my teaching here.

What’s been the highlight for you so far?

I love the creativity of the approach. Bringing content to the classes in a way that I choose and marrying my ideas with the Waldorf approach has been great. It really allows me to meet the students where they are at and provide them with what they need.

Any surprises?

Well, the small size of the school is different than where I was at in the UK. A pleasant surprise has been how accepting and welcoming every one has been.
